Prayers to fight menace of mosquitoes
Muslims in one locality in Hyderabad are praying hard to God during this holy month of Ramzan for one special thing — to save them from the mosquito menace!
Residents of Suryanagar in Toli Chowki have been harassed by mosquitoes for a long time because of the unhygienic conditions, and all attempts to seek GHMC help has been in vain.
On the first Friday of the month of Ramzan, Muslims offered pray-ers at Masjid-e-Noor in Suryanagar Colony. Mufti Maaz Saheb led the prayers, attended by hundreds of Muslims.
Devotees pray for well-being of all, rains
At the Masjid-e-Noor in Suryanagar Colony, residents prayed for the well-being of people, thanked God for good rainfall in Hyderabad, sought His blessings for rains in other parts of the state, and urged him to save people from water-borne diseases and mosquito menace in their locality.
“We have been suffering for four years. GHMC have failed to do fogging and take other steps to check mosquito menace. We had no option but to turn to God,” said Izaz Qureshi, a resident.
Another resident, Mr Farathulla Khan, confirmed that they had sought divine intervention since the GHMC authorities were deaf to their pleas.
Farmers may not get land
Except for a decision by the state government, the farmers who lost their land have no chance of getting back the lands legally in view of the apex court upholding land acquisition. The only option left for them is to demand fair market value for their lands or an alternative site.
Farmers are now demanding that the government cancel the projects, in view of the CBI observation of gross irregularities, corruption and misuse and return their lands or pay market value.
Land acquisition process initiated in 2002 is still incomplete and revenue officials are in the process of finalising them.
Meanwhile, some affected farmers had gone to the High Court and the Supreme Court, demanding return of their lands. The farmers questioned the government’s decision to denotify some lands belonging to VIPs (minister Galla Aruna and actor Vijayaniramala and Krishna) while lands of poor farmers were been forcibly acquired in Nanakramguda in Ranga Reddy district.
However, in the case, Suraram Pratap Reddy vs district collector, Ranga Reddy district, the SC upheld land acquisition proceedings.
Similarly, a group of farmers — G. Mutyam Reddy and five other residents of Nanakramguda, Serilin-gampally, Ranga Reddy district — moved the AP High Court seeking denotification of their lands in survey No. 25/A, 25/AA, 25/E and 25/EE admeasuring 1 acre 33 guntas from the land acquisition notification dated 10/7/2002 and demanding hand over of the lands or provide alternate lands as per 2016/PM9/(IPU)/APIIC /2002 dated 18/11/2002.
HC judge Justice Samudrala Govindarajulu, in his judgement in April this year, dismissed the petition for denotification of the lands. It cited the SC judgement that upheld the land acquisition proceedings.
“After a lapse of a decade of acquisition of lands, the question of now denotifying lands of petitioners at this stage may not arise,” the judge remarked.
The judge said it was open to the petitioners and all other persons whose lands were acquired under the same notification to work out their remedies seeking allotment of the said alternate lands.
“I was served a notice by special deputy collector, land acquisition (industries), in June 2009 stating that my 18.5 gunta land, about half an acre, has been acquired by the government for development of industries at Nanakramguda and asked me to submit land documents. The vacant lands should be returned to us,” said Balram Reddy, who was displaced by the proceedings.
The government acquired 175 acres of Lavnipatta land, 400 acre in Manikonda jagir and 84 acre patta land in Nanakramguda for Emaar and other projects. It has offered a compensation ranging from Rs 1.25 lakh per acre to Rs 8 lakh, which was rejected by many farmers.
Brakes likely on break darshan for VIPs at Tirumala temple
Preferential treatment for legislators, their families and supporters, especially break darshan of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala, is to be discussed at the February 8 meeting of the TTD Board.
There is a strong difference of opinion among officials and politicians over allowing preferential treatment to politicians in Tirumala, especially break darshan and tickets for important occasions, for which other devotees have to stand in queues for hours.
One proposal is to limit the number of letters that a legislator can issue to his supporters which allows them preferential treatment, and to centralise the same from the Assembly. However, politicians refuse to accept this.
The issue had come up in a recent TTD board meeting which was chaired by Mr Bapi Raju and attended by executive officer, Mr L.V. Subrahmanyam and others.
Sources said that while the chairman is backing the legislators, board officials are worried about the fallout of a decision to favour politicians and their hangers-on to this degree.
“If 294 MLAs, 90 MLCs, 42 Lok Sabha MPs, 18 Rajya Sabha MPs issue five letters per day, the number of VIPs will swell to 2,220. Add five family members along with them, and the number will be 11,100. How can this be justified at the cost of the common man,” reasons an official.
TTD executive officer, Mr L.V. Subramanyam said special facilities would be provided to legislators and their families as per the protocol but the same may not be possible for those carrying letters issued by legislators.
“Everyone is equal before the Lord. We are trying our best to provide facilities to all,” he said.
The TTD board will meet on February 8 to review the status of facilities and processing of personal visits and also recommendations of politicians who were given preference in 17 and 25th compartments in the VQC-1 complex, an official said.
Other devotees who have to wait in long queues have been protesting the preferential treatment, but it seems no one is listening.
Hot T awaits walkers
Telugu Desam chief N. Chandrababu Naidu is likely to get a hot reception when he enters Mahbubnagar district in Telangana region on October 22 during his marathon Vast-unna Mekosam padayatra.
The Telangana Joint Action Committee and TRS have threatened to block Mr Naidu’s padayatra demanding that he spell out his stance on separate statehood for the region, even as TD leaders are equally prepared for a showdown with them.
In view of open threats by TJAC, police has decided to tighten security arr-angements on the Kurn-ool-Mahbubnagar border, as well as for Mr Naidu when he enters Mahbub-nagar via Sunkesula Dam and Rajoli on October 22.
Mr Naidu, who set out on the mega 2,000 km walkat-hon from Hindupur in Anantapur district on October 2, entered the 19th day of his tour on Saturday having covered Anantapur and Kurnool districts in Rayalaseema.
He will enter Mahbubn-agar after spending another day in Kurnool.
Mr Naidu, 63, was visited by his wife Bhuvaneswari and son Lokesh last night in view of his failing health. He had complained about cramps and severe pain in his legs. The mother-son duo offered prayers and performed special pujas for the TD chief’s health at the famed Alampur Jogulamba temple on Saturday morning.
“We prayed for my father’s good health,” Mr Lokesh said.
Mr Naidu’s entry into Mahbubnagar has been delayed by a day due to health problems. He was supposed to enter Mahbu-bnagar on October 21.
TD leader Kodela Siva Prasada Rao and doctors advised Mr Naidu to take a break in view of his frail health, but the latter reportedly spurned the suggestion. TD leaders also dismissed suggestions that Lokesh may take over the yatra.
Sources in the TD said that Mr Naidu was briefed about the impending threats from TJAC in Telangana and has decided to talk on Telangana when he enters the region. He is expected to throw the ball in the Centre’s court as he did in his recent letter.
“Naidu is responsible for the Centre going back on Telangana. TJAC is already bringing pressure on the ruling Congress. So far, about a 1,000 people have died for Telangana. The people want to know which side Naidu is on. Is he for Telangana or not,” TJAC chairman M. Kodandaram said.
He asked people to grill Mr Naidu when he enters Mahbubnagar.
Objecting to Prof Kodandaram’s call, Telangana TD Forum convener E. Dayakar Rao appealed to the people not to stall Mr Naidu’s padayatra.
“JAC should grill (TRS chief) K. Chandrasekhar Rao at his farmhouse on the delay on the Telangana issue and Nagam Janardhan Reddy for making a success of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s programme in Mahbubnagar along with TRS MLA, Jupally Krishna Rao,” he said.
