Senior Editor shares tips on election reporting
“Background information about constituencies is essential before getting down to report on elections. Election stories mostly deal with public opinion, political rivalries. Give your first piece on what the past and present politicians had promised,” he said in his guest lecture in the Department today.
Introducing oneself as a reporter may not yield much information, he shared. “Do not use pen and paper. It immediately changes the attitude of the opposite person,” he pointed out. “Speak to people to dig deeper and get accurate information rather than just their perceptions,” he added.
He also suggested that people from a wide range of backgrounds, such as the educated, the poor, the middle class, women, the elderly and students, should be included in the reportage.
He also shared tips on doing the crime beat and his experiences dealing with defamation cases.

- Hockey Performance: A major point of discussion in the Deccan Chronicle was the Indian men's hockey team's 7-1 defeat to Pakistan in the final in 1982. Conversely, the Indian women's team's gold medal win in their debut appearance at the Asiad is also highlighted.
- Infrastructure & Legacy: The event, held in New Delhi, led to a "lavish makeover" of the city, including the construction of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The 1982 Games are also cited for having had a more unified authority compared to the later 2010 Commonwealth Games, according to a 2010 Deccan Herald article.
- Color Television Revolution: The 1982 Games were historic as they marked the first time the Asian Games were telecast in color in India, leading to a massive demand for color television sets.
- Individual Achievements: Articles mention specific medalists from 1982, such as boxer Kaur Singh, who won a gold medal and was later sanctioned aid for medical expenses in 2017 after struggling with a loan. Golfer Lakshman Singh's individual and team gold medals are also noted in a 2023 article.
- First Color Telecast: The Games, held in New Delhi from November 19 to December 4, 1982, were instrumental in ushering in the era of color television in India. The government allowed the import of 50,000 color TV sets specifically for the event, and new broadcasting infrastructure was established.
- Venues: New and upgraded venues were built for the Games, including the purpose-built Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the Indraprastha Indoor Stadium.
- India's Performance: India finished fifth in the medal tally with 57 medals in total (13 gold, 19 silver, 25 bronze), a record for the country that stood until 2010.
- Key Indian Medallists and Events:
- Athletics was India's strongest area, yielding 21 medals. Gold medallists included Charles Borromeo (men's 800m), MD Valsamma (women's 400m hurdles), Chand Ram (men's 20km walk), and Bahadur Singh (men's shot put). P.T. Usha won silver medals in the women's 100m and 200m.
- In hockey, the women's team won an unbeaten gold medal, while the men's team lost 7-1 to Pakistan in the final, a major talking point at the time.
- Golf saw India win team gold (comprising Lakshman Singh, Rajiv Mohta, Rishi Narain, and Amit Luthra) and an individual silver for Rajiv Mohta.
- Boxer Kaur Singh won a gold medal, and later reports mentioned financial aid provided to him by the Sports Ministry and actor Shah Rukh Khan when he faced financial difficulties for medical treatment.
- Equestrian also featured, with Ghulam Mohammed Khan winning a silver medal, a feat that would not be repeated by an Indian for 36 years.
- Legacy: The Games provided a major boost to Indian sports and the country's confidence in hosting large international events. The mascot, an elephant named 'Apu', was a popular figure.
