Hyderabad: Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said the constituent assembly that drafted the constitution was inspired by Mahatma Sri Basaveshwara. He was speaking at Lord Basaveshwara Jayanti celebrations organised by the state government in coordination with the Telangana Veerashaiva Lingayat Federation (TVLF) at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium on Tuesday.

Minister V. Srinivas Goud said Telangana was the only state to celebrate Basava Jayanti apart from Karnataka, thanks to the leadership of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. He expressed dissatisfaction over the prevailing caste discrimination and gender inequalities in the society, in contrast to the preaching of Lord Basaveshwara. "Unfortunately, the Centre has been sitting on the recommendation to give OBC status to the Veerashaiva Lingayat community."

Home minister Mahmood Ali expressed happiness over celebrating two festivals on the same day, Basava Jayanti and Id-ul-Fitr. Minister T. Srinivas Yadav lauded the efforts of MP B.B. Patil in convincing the state government to officially celebrate the Basava Jayanti.

Patil thanked the state government for allotting land and sanctioning Rs 10 crore funds for constructing the Basava Bhavan at Kokapet. "I am pleased to say that the building would be inaugurated within a month’s time in the presence of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao."

B. Hanmanth, president of the TVLF thanked the state government for installing the statue of Basaveshwara on Tank Bund. Earlier in the day, prayers were offered at the statue.

Zaheerabad Congress MP Sri Suresh Shetkar organised a meeting in connection with Basava Jayanti celebrations at Ravindra Bharathi on April 30 and other parts of the State.

Representatives from various State, district and city Samajams attended the meeting held Ministers Quarters Banjara Hills. 

The meeting decided to form a Joint Action Committee for the celebrations, completion of Basava Bhavan at Kokapet, OBC and other issues concerning Veerashaiva Lingayats. The  meeting  was  held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

LORD BASAVESHWARA JAYANTHI AT BASAVA STATUE, TANK BUND SECUNDERABAD

The 892nd Lord Basaveshwara Jayanthi was celebrated in Hyderabad and other parts of the State with religious fervour and gusto by Telangana Veerashaiva Lingayat Federation (TVLF) on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

TVLF Chairman Mr B B Patil, ex MP led the celebrations and garlanded the statue of Lord Basaveshwara at the Tank Bund, Secunderabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Sri Patil recalled the immense contribution of the great social reformer and asked people to follow his ideals. Basaveshwara emphasized the dignity of labour, monotheism, and nonviolence, advocating for equality regardless of caste, class, or gender, he added.

Mr Patil thanked the present Congress government and previous BRS Government for celebrating Basava Jayanthi annually as State function and their immense support to the backward Veerashaiva Lingayat community.

TVLF Vice Chairman Madapu Veeramallesh, TVLF General Secretary and DCMS combined Medak District Chairman Malkapuram Shiva Kumar and others recalled the glorious contribution of Lord Basaveshwara and asked the people to follow his ideals.

Others who attended including TVLF vice president Sri C R Gowri Shanker, Sri Kota Gundappa, Sri Pasaram Srinivas, Sri S Satish Kumar, Shiva Sharanappa, Mrs P Veeramani, Mrs Kota Sangamma, Bettala Srinivas, K Veerender, K Shivakumar Badrinath, Sangappa, Premraj, Ramalingappa, Mrs Chandrakala and others participated.

Basaveshwara or Basavanna, is a well-known 12th century social reformer, philosopher, poet, in the Shiva-focused bhakti movement during the reign of the Kalyani Chalukya/Kalachuri dynasty.

He is revered for his contributions to social justice, equality, and the Lingayat movement, a branch of the Shiva-centered Bhakti movement. Basaveshwara was born in 1131 AD in Bagevadi, which is now part of the undivided Bijapur district in Karnataka.

Basaveshwara actively fought against the oppressive caste system, superstitions, and rituals, advocating for a more equitable society. During his life time, he established the Anubhava Mantapa, a parliament like place for open debates and spiritual discussions in Basavakalyan in Karnataka.

893^rd Basava Jayanthi celebrated with religious fervor and gusto

The 893rd Jayanthi of Lord Basaveshwara, the noted 12th century social reformer was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in Hyderabad and other parts of the State on Monday.

At a function organised by Telangana Government at Ravindra Bharathi, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Transport, Sri Ponnam Prabhakar said Lord Basaveshwara fought for casteless and classes society.

He said Basava teachings were relevant even today and asked people to follow Basava philosophy and his ideals.

Lord Basaveshwara, a 12th century Kannada poet, social reformer, and philosopher who spearheaded a socio-religious revolution, advocating for an egalitarian society based on "Work is Worship" (Kayakave Kailasa), caste abolition, and gender equality.

His philosophy centered on the direct, personal experience of God (Ishtalinga) rather than temple rituals, and he championed his ideals through Vachanas. Basavanna was in the fore front of Shiva-focussed Bhakti movement. He lived during the reign of the Kalyani Chalukya/Kalachuri dynasty.

On the request of the Congress Zaheerabad Member of Parliament, Sri Suresh Shetkar, Mr Ponnam Prabhakar promised all governmental support for early completion of Veerashaiva Lingayat Basava Bhavan at Kokapet, establishment of Veerashaiva Lingayat Corporation and other needs of the Veerashaiva Lingayat community in Telangana State.

He said he would bring the pending community issues to the notice of Chief Minister Sri A Revanth Reddy and resolve the same at the earliest.

Animal Husbandry and Sports Minister Sri Vakati Srihari hailed Basava philosophy and said his teachings should be imbibed by everyone in the State.

Chairman of the Basava Utsav Committee and Congress Zaheerabad MP, Sri Suresh Shetkar said he would bring the pending community issues to the notice of Chief Minister and resolve the same at the earliest.

At Lord Basaveshwara statue on the Tank Bund, Secunderabad, several prominent personalities including Sri Suresh Shetkar, MP, Telangana BJP President Mr Naraparaju Ramachander Rao, Telangana Jagruthi chairman Ms Kalvakuntla Kavitha, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, Sri V C Sajjanar and others garlanded the statue and offered floral tributes.
